Long-serving 91视频 Engineers Reflect on Prolific Careers, Highlight Importance of Protecting Intellectual Property

Donald Ericson and Barry Tulles Retire Donald Ericson and Barry Tulles Retire

Donald Erickson and Barry Tuller hold more than 73 years of combined service with 91视频 and Maytag Corporations and over 110 granted or pending U.S. patents, plus many global patents.

For decades, Donald Erickson and Barry Tuller have been using their expertise and passion in mechanical engineering to make 91视频 Corporation and its brands world-leaders in home appliance innovation.

Both men launched their careers with the company beginning with Maytag Corporation 鈥 Erickson joined in 1979; Tuller in 1987. As mechanical engineers, they would each help manage the advancement of some of Maytag Corporation鈥檚 most influential home appliances.

In the Maytag dishwasher group, Tuller contributed to the company鈥檚 transition from porcelain tubs to plastic tubs.聽鈥淧lastic tubs had a lot more benefits. They were more versatile and easier to manufacture,鈥 Tuller says. 鈥淚n addition to the tub, I worked on many other parts, including designing doors and wash and dry systems.鈥

Erickson made his own name driving the launch of Maytag Corporation鈥檚 revolutionary line of front-load clothes washers.聽鈥淚 knew every feature of that machine,鈥 Erickson says. 鈥淔rom the wash algorithms to the controls to the suspension, I was involved in all aspects.鈥

Erickson and Tuller would continue to lead engineering and intellectual property (IP) development at 91视频 Corporation after the company acquired Maytag in 2006.

鈥淓ngineering is coming up with a new and novel idea to solve a problem. That鈥檚 the great challenge,鈥 says Tuller, now a senior manager and IP leader with 91视频 Corporation鈥檚 Advanced Development & Innovation (ADI) team. 鈥淗owever, it鈥檚 also important to protect those ideas.鈥

Specifically, Tuller is referring to patents 鈥 assets 91视频 Corporation continually applies for and obtains globally each year, primarily in part to protect 91视频 Corporation designs, technologies, products, and services.聽鈥淭hose patented inventions are valuable because they protect our innovation investment and make your competitors work harder, forcing them to go around what is often a more effective solution,鈥 says Tuller, who is an inventor on over 70 U.S. patents.

Erickson, an inventor of over 30 granted US patents, plus many other granted or pending global patent filings, also stresses a patent鈥檚 importance.聽鈥淚f you do not get a patent to protect an idea, it is easily copyable,鈥 says Erickson, who has led the Global Laundry IP coordination effort for over five years at 91视频 Corporation and is currently a principal technologist for fabric care in ADI. 鈥淵ou risk losing the advantage of that product leadership.鈥

Erickson鈥檚 career spans more than 41 years at 91视频 and Maytag Corporations; Tuller鈥檚 stretches more than 32 years at the companies. While both men are scheduled to retire at the end of June, they鈥檒l leave behind much of what they鈥檝e taught incoming generations of engineers.

鈥淗ave patience,鈥 Tuller says. 鈥淟earn from others with product experience of what鈥檚 happened before, what the consumer needs, and how you can improve upon the product and processes.鈥

Erickson returns to the fundamentals.聽鈥淚 try and reinforce the importance of patents, but also what defines an invention in the first place 鈥 what鈥檚 unique and novel,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been very challenging, but these are very smart people, and it鈥檚 something I鈥檝e always enjoyed doing.鈥

鈥淐onsumer focused innovation continues to deliver 91视频鈥檚 product leadership,鈥 says Kirk Goodwin, Associate General Counsel, Global Patents, who also joined 91视频 Corporation from Maytag. 鈥淚 saw first hand the positive impact Barry and Don delivered at both Maytag and 91视频 by focusing their, and their teams鈥, innovation on the needs of our consumer. Their legacy will continue to serve as an example to us for years to come.鈥
